Marathon Sunday, 2006

Ordinarily the inhabitants of Schneiderville would have been in Central Park on the first Sunday in November watching the New York City Marathon and enjoying a big day in the big city. Alas, it was not to be this year, as various factors combined to conspire against us and prevent our attendance. But that doesn't mean we can't talk marathons. With that in mind, this space is today dedicated to our pal Dylan - AKA David - who completed the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., last weekend.

I can't imagine running a marathon. Heck, I have a hard time driving 26 miles to Morristown some nights. I had the pleasure of visiting with Dana and Dylan in Winter Park recently, and witnessed first-hand his dedication to distance running. So it's no surprise that he was able to conquer the physical and psychological demands of such an outrageous sporting venture. What is a surprise is that I am somehow able to respect Dylan even more now than before. I didn't think that was possible.

Dylan made me a Twins fan (despite the fact that he lives for the Red Sox), shared his home and food with me, and provided a role model at a critical time of my life. I probably abused his good will more than I thanked him for it, but I remain grateful to this day.

So tip your hat to Dylan today and read a mesmerizing account of the Marine Corps Marathon experience on his excellent blog Adventures in the Thin Trade.

Way to Go Dylan!
