Gonna Give it a Tri

Well, you might not believe this, but I somehow got suckered into entering a triathlon in North Carolina in August. If it were the eating, drinking and watching TV kind of triathlon there would be no surprise. But this is the swimming, biking and running kind. It's not anything like an Ironman event - this is a Sprint Triathlon: 750 meter swim in a lake, 30 kilometer (approx 18 mile) bike ride, 5 kilometer (3.1 mile) run.

I plan to document my training here on Schneiderville, in party to keep me honest and active as I get in shape, and in part to educate potential bettors who might like to wager on my chances of finishing alive. I'm following a training program specifically designed for first-time sprint competitors, mixed with a healthy dose of advice from Dylan (who just finished his second marathon in Atlanta), fellow entrants, and trainers from the local YMCA, where I am working on my swimming and overall flexibility.

How does one get roped into something like this? Beer and high school reunions. Apparently I let one of my oldest friends, BMHS 86er Chris Schmidt (Malick), attack my senses sometime after the cocktail hour ended, and I agreed to run the race with her.

First up on my list of training challenges? The Ridgewood Run 5K on Memorial Day.
