Willie & Dylan & Yogi

God Bless quirky summer concerts, unique touring artists and craigslist.org. Katie and I caught Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan as they swung through Yogi Berra Stadium on their minor league ballpark tour of America on Friday (snagging last-minute tix from craigslist after the box office sold out). Willie is gold on stage, easily ripping though an impressive catalogue with Texas charm and old-friend familiarity. You'd be amazed how many Willie Nelson songs you know, or by how well he covers the works of others in concert. He rocked. Dylan in concert is always a gamble. Any number of things can go wrong...bad venue sound, incoherent Bob, mystifying setlist, etc. We last saw Dylan in Chicago on Halloween night 2000 in the fieldhouse at Northwestern, where it sounded awful and Bob was confused. This time we hit the jackpot. We lucked out with seats (it was GA) in the same spot where we usually watch baseball - on the hill in right field with a perfect view of the stage behind second base, lots of space, and luckily in a spot where we could actually see Dylan. The sound was excellent, and he energetically tore through a strong set heavily influenced by two quality records: 'Blonde on Blonde' and 'Time Out of Mind.'
